... a Sisterhood of Stampers

On Sept 2nd, I posted a get well card for my brother and indicated that after he saw the card and had a good outcome, I would come back and explain... I am going to merely post a picture here so you can see his GReat outcome!  His goal was to be able to walk his property in Montana without pain... check out that good looking right foot!

John recently got another get well card from Dr. Amy Germaine, a professional colleague of his. John was excited to have another person in his life who makes handmade cards!

He sent a picture of her card which I have posted [with permission] along with my email comments back to him...

Card by Dr. Amy Germaine
Hey John,
Amy had a great idea for a "Male Card" which usually generates great fear in the hearts of card makers!  Men are generally drawn to plain designs, no frou-frou, and definitely no pinks!  It is against every fiber in a girl's heart not to add ribbon or charms or lots of bling, a little glitter and frequently silly, big-headed images.
Amy has successfully walked that fine line of 'masculinity' with clean lines and a fairly sedate brown, grey & green color palate.  She managed to sneak in at least five layers including an embossed basket weave texture [again, masculine as opposed to a floral design].  And the element I especially like is the bow [careful Amy, don't go frou-frou here!] made of... Ta-da... heavy twine!  Cool!  If you have to have a bow on a "Male" card - make it a rough-tough woodsie material!  Well done Amy!
She doesn't know that I have, over the years, inoculated you against exposure to bling.  I do, however, confine it to a simple enclosure that contains the sequins, glitter and faux jewels so it won't accidentally get in your hair or on your clothes as you head out the door to an important meeting.  Heaven forbid!
Kudos to Amy and the Sisterhood of Crafty Stampers!

Snow Globe

Upright Photo
I was asked to be a Guest Designer for Through the Craftroom Door Anything Goes Challenge Blog for this week.  Patties Creations on Etsy is sponsoring this challenge & has provided me with this digi Polar Bear Snow Globe for my project.  This card will also be published in the next edition of the Jan/Feb issue of TTCRD magazine.

Here is the process for this card:
  • The digi image was printed out three times on Neenah's Solar White /Classic Crest, 80 lb. Cover Stock, once on the Neenah "Desert Storm" CS of the base card & once on a wood grain sheet from PhotoPlay's "Campfire & Lakeside" 6x6 paper pad to create the Snow Globe's base.
  • An Exacto Knife was used to cut out the inside of the globe
  • Background inside the globe is a Handcrafted paper from Craft Perfect by Tonic Studios "Hailstorm" in light blue.  It was cut slightly larger than the Globe & glued to the front panel of the base card
  •  Copics used on the three images of the bear as needed included C00, 1 & 3; E33, 41, 43; & B91
  • The bears were fussy cut, sculpted and layered using foam tape for the rounded areas and "attached" to the bear or background with Art Glitter Designer Adhesive as appropriate.  He was then placed on the globe background.
  • The perimeter was sealed with foam tape and clear extra small beads & blue sequins were added before sealing the panel to the card base.
  • Versafine Clear & white detail EP was used to stamp and emboss the sentiment from Paper Wishes: Hot Off the Press "Stockings" Die & Stamp Set.
  • A bow was tied in a silvery blue ribbon and attached around the base.

Washi Christmas

You know all that Washi tape you have been hoarding in a drawer?  Get it all out and try this - it is an easy card to do using coordinating Washi tape.
  • I chose tapes with red or gold designs or glitter.
  • The red & gold tape was layered alternately on a piece of green scrap CS.
  • Three trees were cut from that CS using the Stampin' Up "In the Woods" framelet Die set.
  • The set comes with the 2nd die to cut a mat that frames the tree - I cut three frames out of white CS.
  • White scraps were used to create the snowy forest floor & the glittered scraps were cut to add a little more decoration to the trees.
  • Finally, the trees were layered &/or elevated on the base CS using foam tape.
I created this for the new 613 Ave C  challenge starting Dec 2:  "ATG/ optional Twist: "Use Washi Tape"  You have the month of December to show your creative talents!   For details of the challenge and for some very creative ideas from the DT's incredible inspiration concepts -  click HERE!

Thanksgiving Gratitude...

This image is a freebie from the wonderful website of Elizabeth  Dulemba.   Dulemba is an award-winning author & an amazing artist & illustrator who shares her drawings with teachers and others on her "Coloring Pages".
When I saw this image I immediately thought of this sentiment and combined my "Gratitude" stamp with my own handwriting to create it.  I think it is so funny - especially since we didn't have turkey for the first time in years!
The image was printed three times, colored with Copics, fussy cut & sculpted to re-assemble the chair, pillow & turkey in layers.

Wooden ornament...

Trying to clean up my RubberRoom for expected guests this month I found this never used 'Moose' and the 'Christmoose' sentiment [by The Stamping Pad Co.] in a box.  Of course, I had to stop cleaning and try them out.  I colored the images with Copics, stamped the package three times and candy cane twice to 3D them, and put Glossy Accents on the ornaments.  I made a grassy knoll for the moose to stand on [and then remembered it is Christmas time and it should have been snowy where he comes from -  blame it on Global Warming!]  The sky and clouds were done with 'Stormy Skies' Distress Ink, a sponge and a homemade cloud template.  My wooden ornament started as a Die-cut balsa heart, colored with Copics, added Liquid Pearls and fastened on the red ribbon as a hanger.  Although it is secured with a small piece of foam tape, it is designed to easily come off for the recipient to use as an ornament or package decor.

I created this for the new 613 Ave C  challenge starting Oct 7:  "ATG/ optional Twist: "Use Something Wooden"  You have the month of October to show your creative talents!   For details of the challenge and for some very creative ideas from the DT's incredible inspiration concepts -  click HERE!

Sup?

This was created this for the new 613 Ave C  challenge starting Sept 1:  "ATG/ optional Twist: Make it CAS"  You have the whole month of September to show your creative talents!   For details of the challenge and for some very creative ideas from the DT's incredible inspiration concepts -  click HERE!

I recently purchased the Tim Holtz set "Hipster" of real-red-Rubber [unmounted] stamps and it was the goat I grabbed to use first.  The CS I chose to use is 80# Neenah - "Desert Storm". Copics are my medium of choice - but I really wanted to use my Prismacolor Pencils with this image & CS combination.  The plaid on the suit is my addition, it is not part of the stamp.
I am essentially a beginner with Pencils - have so much to learn.  My dream would be to have the skills of this blogger, artist and my friend, Shani Thomas at Paperesse.  Someday, my friend, I will develop the smooth blending skills for which you are known!  Please keep giving me pointers!
The large size stamp, plus my design concept of elevated layers [creating the "white space" essential for a CAS style] made it necessary to make an envelope to fit.  Cut from a sheet of hoarded 12 x 12", there was enough left over to mat the white CS inside for my personal message.
Once completed, I immediately chose the recipient and occasion - and when mailed and received, I will be back to describe the circumstances.  It is a convoluted story that deserves another post!

Fantasy Magic... Happy B'day Gena!

Happy 15th Birthday Gena!
Scott and I are dancing a celebratory jig in your honor!

I am in love with the Mo Manning images of dwarves and gnomes... her images are so delightfully detailed and realistic [they look like all the gnomes who live in my woods!]
I have wanted for a very long time to color this threesome that I merged with the png files purchased at the Digital Pencil Too.  This piece represents hours of meditative, soul-soothing, total escape coloring!  After all three were completed with Copics, I started creating the background scene using the "Fern" stencil [KaiserCraft] and Distress Inks.  Would you believe I have not used a stencil before this??  Next was the rock 'floor' [source unknown] of their living space, adding three dragonflies  [PSX] and finally inking the edges with the same Distress Inks.

I created this for the new 613 Ave C  challenge starting Aug 5:  "ATG/ optional Twist: "Fantasy / Magic"  You have the month of August to show your creative talents!   For details of the challenge and for some very creative ideas from the DT's incredible inspiration concepts -  click HERE!

Happy Birthday Amber!

I was cleaning off my desk, ready to give up for the day and leave my RubberRoom when I came across two scraps of this designer paper.  I noticed one piece was cut exactly right to fit an A2 size card.  It made perfect sense to stop and take the time to tape it down on the front of some cardstock so it would not be lost in the shuffle.  Now I can retire...
Have you ever done that?  You are tired, ready to quit for the day - just cleaning up a little before you turn off the lights... but, as I stared at the paper on the front of the card, I got to thinking about what image would work with it.  And as my mojo tweaked my brain - I dug around in a stamp drawer & found this Magenta stamp - 'Heart Flower'.  Ok, my mojo & energy level are both back in play.  Stamped the image, colored it with Copics:

It was then fussy cut, the center of the flower sculpted [dry embossed] from the front and the leaves from the back.  It was adhered to the front of the card using both a super strong double sided tape to hold the center down and foam tape to elevate the petals.
There was exactly enough left of the 2nd piece of scrap DP to decorate the sentiment panel on the inside and the envelope flap.  Perfect - used every bit of it!  A Memory Box die was used for the sentiment & added to the inside.  Then, and only then, did my mojo loosen its grip on me... I got up without cleaning another iota off my desk, turned out the lights and went to bed.

The third and final grad card needed this year.  This image is a Sassy Cheryl and has been the 'go-to' grad figure for me for a couple of years now.  Colored with Copics, embellished with Duo Glue/ Gold Foil for details on her horn and tiny gold metallic 'buttons' from Creative Crystal Company used in the corner and on her tassel.

Graduation Time... Brenndan

Our God-daughter's son is graduating this year.  He is a very mature young man who is very comfortable around adults - he was able to hold his own in adult conversations way before his teen years.  I took a note from his graduation announcement and picture - and created a Congratulation card that I felt would be a nod to his maturity and masculinity.

I wanted a rather formal look with browns, tans and blacks, but just a touch of whimsy that would still be fun!  The two 12 x 12 sheets of DP that I found seemed perfect for the base card and the mats for each surface.  The card and matching envelope template is 'WildCards' by Words Worth Stamps - which appears not to be in business any longer.  All I had to do was to lay it over my chosen DP and trace it.  Makes a really 'wonky', fun card!

I used his announcement and cut out the "CLASS OF 2018" label and his picture for this project.  The little pocket on the flap to the right was created to hold our check for his college fund.  It is stamped with "so proud" from the Claudine Helmuth Studio 'Words & Frames 1' stamp set.  The 'stitched ovals' dies by Lil Inker were used for his photo, the mat behind his photo and for the mat in the center for the sentiment.  The sentiment by Penny Black was embossed in white.

You can see in this last picture of the inside how truly wonky this shape is.  The envelope mimics the card shape exactly but a little bigger to fit the card.  I stamped Congratulations on a leftover section of the paper and tore the edges before gluing it down on the flap.

Because of the uneven shape, extra postage is required - no surprise there!

Graduation Time... Gena!

Some of you know about my young neighbor friend who crafts with me... Gena just graduated from 8th grade into High School last night.  So proud of her!  [She started 4th grade in Special Needs classes - and by the beginning of 8th grade was "mainstreamed".]  After all the awards were given out for Perfect Attendance, Valedictorian, Sportsmanship, etc, etc... the last award of the evening was the Principal's Choice Award.  The Principal gave a wonderful speech about "someone who has made the most progress, taught science projects to 5th graders, participated in Docents, [etc.]'' He went on & on... and then he named Gena!  Gena was flabbergasted and so was her family!  It is a wonderful 3D plaque that is very impressive - what an incredible thing for her - so proud!  Guess I said that already!

Whenever I am teaching her something - her favorite phrase  is "I got this!"  This is usually uttered before I have even finished an explanation... and she's usually right.  Gena is a visual learner and she will watch me like a hawk or examine an end product then jump right in - and she does "got it" most of the time.

When I found this image I thought it was perfect - I made the little sign and cut around her fingers to 'hold' it.  She is colored with Copics, fussy-cut and elevated above this 'door-way' with foam tape.  The die is by Sissix: 'Stacked Deckle' - the E-folder used for the pink mat is also Sissix: 'Dots'.  Congrats die cut on the inside is by Little B - a collection called 'Handwritten'.
I used glitter on her bow - what teenage girl doesn't like pink and glitter?

At Snail speed...

This very tired rabbit riding a snail depicts a familiar feeling - had to download it.  Besides, look at that coloring opportunity!  This is a freebie from Elizabeth E. Dulemba's website: Coloring Page Tuesdays.

I traced the entire snail with an Embossing Pen and then embossed with clear EP for a little shiny definition.  The snail was colored with Copics and given a marvelous, sparkly sheen with Wink of Stella.  It was mounted with foam tape on a Bokeh background - DP by Paper House Productions: "Artist Paper Pix".  The edges of the background were inked with 'Stormy Sky' Distress Ink.  "White Opal" Liquid Pearl was added to the center of the buttons [from my stash] & they were randomly attached with glue dots to be the flowers.  She was adorned with a small yellow ribbon tied in a bow around her neck.  White dotted snail slime was added with a white pen.

Bouquet of Flowers...

This image was a freebie and for the life of me, I cannot remember the artist!   If I remember it right, it was a last little 'gift' from someone who would not be drawing freebies anymore.  If anyone recognizes this digi - leave me a comment?  It certainly was fun to color with my Copics - I colored a pale green behind the ring of flowers to make it a little more solid, create some depth and make the sentiment seem recessed.  The image panel was edged with a dark green ink and then mounted on a block of fun-foam to elevate it over the ribbon.

20's Birthday

Vintage images are great fun for me!  I merged one over the other to create this card front.  The "Socialite" is by Kenny K. Stamps - which closed almost a year ago.   The vintage car is a freebie from Beyond the Fringe.  The sentiment is by Inkadinkado
I colored the images with Copics and splattered the background with blue ink.   That mat is a dark blue paper liberally sprinkled with silver sparkles.  Two slits were cut at the top and bottom right side and a blue satin ribbon was introduced from the back and run around to the back of the mat to secure as an embellishment.  I am a big fan of flat, easily & cheaply mailed cards - always looking for ways to add ribbon or embellishments that won't trigger the Post Office clerk wanting another stamp!

Wind in your hair!

Our Grandson Shane has a dirt bike like this one and he rides it with such speed and purpose!  This last summer we had a family reunion at Steamboat Springs - Shane, with his red hair flying in the wind, loved tearing down the path between the three campsites we had set up!  He was our courier, our communication source and, between him and his sister Aubry, our constant companions.  I could not pass up this Mo Manning image for his birthday.
This center step base card I covered with blue DP, a simple knotted ribbon and three graduated enamel dots.  The sentiment was created on my computer.  I used Copics to color the image and the simple background.  A rectangle was sketched in and the excess cut away - allowing the back of the boy, his foot and rear tire to be fussy cut outside the frame.   A Copic pen was then used to color the edge of the panel and it was elevated on a piece of sticky back foam [from the Dollar Store] to give even more depth to the project.
I created this for the new 613 Ave C  challenge... "ATG/ optional Twist: Mainly Blue".  You have the month of May to show your creative talents!   For details of the challenge and for some very creative ideas from the DT's incredible inspiration concepts -  click HERE!

A Dude's Christmas...

This Santa is by the artist Elizabeth O. Dulemba - a freebie from her website called Coloring Page Tuesdays.  Ms. Dulemba is a very accomplished author and illustrator of Children's books and she has a wonderful archive of images that she offers free as "coloring pages".  Many of them include the subject reading or in a setting with books.  She is very talented and I encourage you to check out her free images!
I colored the image with Blue-Violet Copics.  I think because of the shine on the card base, I did not seem to get the same color reflected on any of the three shots.  The closest colors to reality are in the photo below - right.
The base card is a re-cycled slide mechanism from a card I made ages ago and did not like the final results.  I have no idea of the source for them.  I think the lack of frou-frou, the colors and the use of a mechanical interaction make this card Dude friendly!

COPICS:
BV01, 02, 04
C00, 1, 3
N0, 1, 3
W00, 1
E000, 00, 01
R00
Santa was fussy-cut, embossed from the back to round the image and mounted on foam tape.  Papers are re-cycled from scraps.
